Statement from Councilman Chaim Deutsch

image001The following is a statement from Councilman Chaim Deutsch about the assault and rape of an 82 year old woman earlier this week in Brighton Beach. The NYPD has identified 18 year old Asa Robert as the suspect in this crime, and are asking for the public’s assistance in tracking him down:

“I am shocked and disgusted at the heinous and barbaric nature of this crime against an elderly woman. The 18 year old suspect, Asa Robert, was identified by a fingerprint he left at the scene. He has a history of police interaction and is now the subject of a police manhunt. In addition to the $2,500 reward being offered by the NYPD, I am adding to that a $5,000 reward for information leading up to his arrest and indictment. I am asking the NYPD to charge the suspect with a bias crime; the victim has recounted that the attack occurred only after she made the assailant aware of her Jewish religious belief. He then forced her to swear on a Bible that she would not call the police. This horrific crime has shaken our community to its core, and we will not rest easy until we know that the attacker is in police custody. We should all keep the victim and her family in our prayers. I am hopeful that the NYPD will make an arrest before anyone else gets hurt.”
